Pregnancy Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common affliction in pregnant women. Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common condition, one that is most primarily characterized by certain symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (and its related symptoms)left untreated can be very dangerous. This disorder is also known as "spastic colon" and "nervous colon."

The causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in pregnancy are still unknown and being researched diligently. What is known is that the muscles in the colon either squeeze too hard or not hard enough, which results in food that is eaten moving too quickly or too slowly through the intestines.

Coping with Pregnancy Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Diet is a major contributing factor in Irritable Bowel Syndrome in pregnancy. Because of that the first thing a pregnant woman must do is alter her diet.

For instance, fatty and sugary food, in addition to those that have a high caffeine content, should be eliminated. Foods that are high in yeast content, dairy products, spicy foods, grains, corn, and rice should also be removed from the diet. These foods cause intestinal spasms and cramping and aggravate the condition.

Relief from the symptoms of this disorder is gradual and a relatively slow process; oftentimes even six months may pass before the individual feels any improvement. It is important to know that patience is extremely necessary in dealing and coping with Irritable Bowel Syndrome in pregnancy.

It is recommended that a woman suffering with this disorder consider maintaining a daily food diary. Food diaries are very helpful because what the individual is eating and drinking is documented and in doing so offending foods are identified as well as patterns between certain foods and resultling symptoms so that these foods can be eliminated from the diet.

Making these dietary changes and taking recommended precautions can relieve symptoms.

An added benefit to keeping a food diary is that the patient can review and discuss its contents with her doctor. It is a helpful tool for the physician in treating the case and evaluating any progress.
