Irritable Bowel Syndrome Relief

Irritable Bowel Syndrome has not been classified as a disease. It is categorized as a disorder of the colon that is not functioning properly. Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common condition, one that is most primarily characterized by certain symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation.

Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as well as symptoms and severity of the disease, may vary from patient to patient so you must discuss the specifics of your case with your physician.

A diagnosis is the first step in the identification and treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. A licensed physician performs certain tests that determine if the individual is suffering from this disorder.

The doctor will discuss the patient's medical history as well as perform a physical exam. He may do a stool test to check for infection. One of the most common tests is the flexible sigmoidoscopy.

This test involves a flexible, lighted tube which is used to examine the lower part of the colon. Another of the tests is the colonoscopy. This test involves the insertion of a small tube which is used to examine the entire length of the colon and determine the severity of the patient's disorder.

After a diagnosis is made the physician will determine the course of treatment. There are several options. One is drug treatment. There are two drugs that are used to treat irritable bowel syndrome: Lotronex and Tegaserod.

Lotronex, is a drug that is a nerve receptor, which relaxes the colon and slows the movemenet of waste through the lower bowel. Tegaserod is a drug that targets and relieves constipation.

Each patient should work closely with their physician in order to find the method of treatment that suits them best.

Another contributing factor in Irritable Bowel Syndrome is stress. Stress and its accompanying anxiety aggravate and intensify symptoms.

Every sufferer of Irritable Bowel Syndrome must find ways to deal with stress in their lives. One may consider counseling, biofeedback, daily exercise, progressive relaxation techniques, and deep breathing are all suggested methods of dealing with stress.

The good news is that with the proper treatment, making dietary changes and taking recommended precautions symptoms can be relieved and a recurrence of the condition can be prevented.
