How to Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome With Dietary Change

Irritable Bowel Syndrome has not been classified as a disease. Rather, it is categorized as a disorder of the colon that is not functioning properly. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a very common condition, one that is most primarily characterizedby certain symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation, whitish mucous in the blood, and fatigue. In most cases, symptoms are generally mild and can be treated and controlled quite easily in a number of ways.

However, since diet is a major contributing factor in irritable bowel syndrome, the best way to treat irritable bowel syndrome is to change your diet. It is important to know what foods to eat and which to avoid.

For instance fatty and sugary foods,in addition to those that have a high caffeine content, should be eliminated. Foods that are high in yeast content, dairy products, spicy foods, grains, corn, and rice should also be removed from the diet. These foods can overly stimulate the intestines and cause contractions and spasms, which in turn cause cramping and pain.

Adding fiber to the diet is helpful and strongly recommended because it improves the functioning of the intestines. It is important to note that when increasing ones fiber intake it is equally important to increase the intake of water daily (a minimum of six to eight glasses of water a day is recommended.)

There are a number of different foods that can be introduced to ones diet in order to add more fiber such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals. Be advised though that adding fiber to the diet should be done gradually. Begin by adding a small amount of whole grain bran, about one teaspoon a day.

Then continue to eat a bit more each day until you are able to consume up to twelve teaspoons a day. Not increasing the amount gradually could result in discomfort as in gas, bloating and even constipation.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a very serious condition. Each patient should work closely with their physician in order to find the method of treatment that suits them best. The good news is that with the proper treatment, making dietary changes and taking recommended precautions symptoms can be relieved and a recurrence of the condition can be prevented.
