Drug Treatment for Irritable Bowel
Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome has not been classified as a
disease. It is categorized as a disorder of the colon that is
not functioning properly. Irritable bowel syndrome is a
disorder in which the nerves in the body that usually control
the muscles in the GI tract are too active.
There are five categories of treatment for irritable bowel
syndrome: treatment through diet, treatment through
supplements, treatment through alternative therapies, treatment
through stress management, and treatment through prescription
medications. Of these five, one of the most common is drug
treatment.
It is important to realize however that there is no single
drug used for all cases of irritable bowel syndrome. Treatment
for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as well as symptoms of the
disease, may vary from patient to patient so you must discuss
the specifics of your case with your physician.
It is also important to remember that even if you have
chosen the path of prescription drugs for treatment, this
should not be designed to be a life long solution. The patient
should make a decision and determine to live a healthier
lifestyle in general.
Doctors have been successful too in treating and relieving
symptoms in their patients by ordering dietary changes. For
instance removing foods from the diet that are fatty, sugary,
and acidy, and supplementing the diet with fiber have been
effective.
Often times doctors will prescribe antidepressants and
medications that relax the muscles. The muscle relaxers address
the possible cause of mutility in the colon with the hope that
as the muscles relax the cells are then able to move about
freely, thus restoring normal functioning of elimination of
waste and toxic substances from the colon.
Although Irritable Bowel Syndrome can progress to be a most
debilitating malady, oftentimes sufferers are unaware that they
have it. The symptoms of bloating, gas, diarrhea (in some) and
constipation (in others) are often not known by the individual
to be symptoms commonly associated with IBS.
These symptoms can range in severity from individual to
individual, however overall symptoms are severe enough to make
every day a battle and take their toll on ones quality of
life.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (and its related symptoms)left
untreated can be very dangerous. It is critical to address it
and pursue treatment.
