Diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome has not been classified as a disease. Rather, it is categorized as a disorder of the colon that is not functioning properly. Irritable bowel syndrome is a very common condition, one that is most primarily characterized by certain symptoms, such as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation, whitish mucous in the blood, and fatigue.

Diet is a major contributing factor in irritable bowel syndrome. Because diet plays such a major role in the symptoms of IBS, it plays as large a role in controlling and relieving its symptoms. In order to control and find relief from the debilitating symptoms associated with this malady it will be necessary to remove certain types of food from the daily diet.

For instance, fatty and sugary food, in addition to those that have a high caffeine content, should be eliminated. Foods that are high in yeast content, dairy products, spicy foods, grains, corn, and rice should also be removed from the diet. These foods cause intestinal spasms and cramping, aggravate the irritable bowel condition, and result in increased fatigue and lethargy.

Individuals that suffer from bloating and gas will need to eliminate foods such as beans, cabbage, and carbonated beverages,as these foods create more gas and also aggravate an irritable bowel condition. It is recommended that fewer nuts and raisins be eaten, as well as any foods that contain sorbitol, and antacids containing magnesium. Acidity foods and juices (apple juice for example) should also be avoided.

On the other hand, there are foods that are not only permissible but advisable. Feel free to consume plenty of vegetables. Fresh fruits are also nutritious and are a pleasant addition to any diet. At the same time it is necessary to increase the intake of fiber in the diet, it is equally as necessary when doing so to be careful to drink a minimum of six to eight glasses of water a day (to avoid constipation.)

It can however be a challenge to create or customize a diet that works well in your particular case. People with IBS have particularly high levels of antibodies, and this is often a hindrance in making dietary changes.

Regarding the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, many people turn to natural alternatives in order to relieve their symptoms, particularly peppermint oil and probiotics. Peppermint oil is most widely used for irritable bowel syndrome and is thought to reduce the abdominal pain and bloating that is caused by the disorder.

Probiotics are live microbial organisms that are naturally present in the digestive tract and are thought to promote health, including suppressing the growth of potentially harmful bacteria.
