What Type Of Health Changes Will My Dog Go Through As They Grow?

The moment that a puppy was born, his fed him and took care of him; quite often without any form of effort on the puppy’s part. This will continue until the puppy is about 6 or so weeks old during which time his only source of nutrition is his mother’s milk. By the age of 6 weeks, the mother will discontinue feeding the puppy milk and instead turn over the job of feeding the puppy to you, the mother puppy’s trusted master. Some serious growth occurs during this first 6 week period. Your puppy enters the world with his eyes sealed shut with mucous and will stay shut for several weeks before they first begin to open and look upon the world around him. Furthermore, your puppy will gain some serious weight during this time which of course is dependent upon his actual breed and can range anywhere from 15 to over 40 times the weight the puppy was at birth.

The puppy will need plenty of energy and nutrients to get himself through this fast period of growth, but by the time that the puppy matures into a full grown adult dog, his energy levels will begin to decrease and his need for nutrients will decrease as well.

As this maturing begins to occur, it is a physical sign to you, his master that you will need to change his diet as the needs in food will be changing drastically. The food that was needed to support the puppy’s fast growth will no longer support him once he matures. As his needs change, so to should his diet to compensate for the changes. You will also want to get your dog some cheap dog clothes such as some dog sweaters to keep them warm.

As an adult dog, he will need certain nutrients to continue to live healthy and these nutrients are found only in the food that the dog eats. These nutrients include things like protein, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins as well as fats and water. Meeting the minimum daily requirement that your dog needs is solely your responsibility and these requirements are based on the stages in life that the dog is in. The life stages of a dog include the growth stage, maintenance stage, a work stage, a pregnancy stage if it is a female as well as a lactation stage.

How Does Menopause Affect IBS?

Did you know that women are more likely to develop IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) than men? It's true, and many believe this is because of the different hormones that the female body produces throughout the monthly menstrual cycle. So what happens when menopause begins?

Once this period of life begins, the hormones that are produced by the body change, and so will the problems you have with IBS and the related symptoms. If you consider the way hormones work through a woman's fertile years, you might understand how the hormonal changes of menopause affect IBS.

Irritable bowel affects up to fifteen percent of the population of the United States, and it is estimated that 70-75 percent of patients are female. Those with this condition suffer from bouts of cramping, bloating, and diarrhea or constipation. This is something that is usually diagnosed before age 50, and some go through life dealing with it, but not realizing that they have a medical condition. There is no real cure for IBS, but there are a number of lifestyle changes and medications that seem to help some patients.

The symptoms and flare ups of IBS tend to be worse for all women when they are having their period. Fluctuating hormones seem to be the culprit, with the rise in progesterone during this time being one of the more influential triggers. This means that a woman with IBS will have far more trouble symptoms and bouts of bloating, diarrhea, and cramping. Because of this, not only do more women get IBS than men, it also means that they are going to have a harder time dealing with it.

Pregnancy can bring about a whole new set of problems for those women with IBS as well. Pregnancy will do many things to a women's body, and what will happen with IBS seems to be different for every women. Hormones start raging through the body, and many of these are the same or are much like the ones related to menses. For some women, their IBS is much more under control while they are expecting, and for others, the opposite is true.

The good news is that the hormones that are associated with IBS flare-ups will subside substantially when menopause happens. Women with IBS can expect they will begin to feel much better, and their symptoms will be more comparable to men with the condition. Women with IBS generally begin to feel better around age 50 to 55, depending on when they go through menopause. They may notice a sudden improvement when menopause begins, or it may take a while for symptoms to slow down. It is important to remember that while going through menopause, the fluctuations of hormones can be dramatic. This might make IBS worse for a time, but it should pass. Either way, this is a time when a woman can expect to gain some relief from her IBS symptoms at least.

If you have IBS symptoms, then this calls for careful planning of your grocery shopping every week. Just in case you are wondering if this means that there is hardly anything you can buy as you now have to keep to a restrictive diet, it is not really as bad as it sounds.

There are plenty of food substitutions that you can use for most IBS triggers. For instance, you may consider replacing beef with fish for easier digestion. Eggs or dairy may worsen your condition. So you can buy soy products instead. Coffee and alcohol may be items that you should no longer buy.

When shopping, it is best to use your common sense and not buy the foods than to have painful and uncomfortable consequences later. For many IBS sufferers, just managing their diet alone can help keep IBS symptoms at bay.

Do not forget about adding high fiber products to your diet. Many different breads, grains, fruits, and vegetables are full of fiber. If you do not regularly eat high-fiber foods then you can take a fiber supplement. However, if you are having diarrhea symptoms, then you should reduce your fiber consumption. You will need to balance and manage your fiber intake accordingly. Since fiber is beneficial for the entire family, do ensure that you buy enough of these items.

Your meals after preparation can also be just as delicious. There are plenty of recipes especially for IBS sufferers that are available on the internet or in the bookstore. These recipes list ingredients that are not known to cause IBS symptoms. Remember to include these ingredients in your shopping list.

Teas can help relieve your IBS symptoms as well. The two most common teas used for soothing digestive disorders are peppermint and fennel tea. These are both very effective for stomach pain and spasms. They also help with relaxation, which is a great benefit for IBS sufferers. These teas can be purchased in bag form or as loose tea leaves. Drink the tea at least once or twice every day.

You should draw up a grocery list that gives your IBS symptoms high consideration. It is not that you have to stop eating tasty and delicious food but you do have to use some good sense. It may seem like a big adjustment especially if you are used to instant foods and with little fiber. But careful diet planning will be worth your while if it can help you cope with your symptoms better.

The FDA recently requested that a drug which is commonly used for IBS be withdrawn from the market, with the agency adding that doctors who prescribe the drug should work with their patients to transition them into other therapies. Thankfully, studies have already shown that there are specific bacteria that are as effective as the drug and have no side effects. The news about this probiotic treatment offers relief from the debilitating constipation; diarrhea, abdominal cramps, gas, and bloating that cause IBS victims to suffer.

Since there are so many things that can go wrong with the human body, it is amazing that any of us feel healthy. The rush for scientists to find a cure for every problem people experience is now having a negative impact on us, as bacteria have become resistant to the drugs and many of the medications have side effects that are worse than the initial ailment. Stress, emotions, and diet can strongly affect the colon of people that affected by IBS, triggering a variety of symptoms ranging from uncomfortable to agonizing. Symptoms of IBS can be so severe that their lifestyle can be disrupted. Although IBS cannot be traced back to a single cause, it is classified as a functional disorder, meaning a problem with the way the body works. Researchers have concluded that more than 75 % of patients with IBS have evidence of excessive bacteria in their small intestines. Doctors tell their patients to control their diet and lessen emotional stress, as well as avoid French fries, milk products, chocolate, alcohol, caffeine, and carbonated sodas. The following factors continually affect overall health and can leave microflora in a bad state: stress, diet, pollution, aging, illness, colon cleanses, drugs and antibiotics, medical treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation, and environmental changes due to traveling or moving.

Research has shown that Bifidobacterium infantis is an effective treatment for all the symptoms of IBS. Endometriosis With Ibs: Calming The Common Symptoms

While doctors do not know why women develop endometriosis with IBS, some experts think that it is triggered by an intestinal infection, a severely stressful life event or hormonal reasons.

Whatever the cause, IBS symptoms can be pretty debilitating, with spasms in the colon, the large section of the intestine before the rectum and the anus, causing constipation, diarrhea or both. And for women with endometriosis who are suffering abdominal pains having IBS can be pretty unbearable.

If you are having IBS symptoms on a regular basis, see your doctor for a formal diagnosis. With a positive diagnosis of IBS alone, your doctor might prescribe an anti-spasmodic medication such as hyoscyamine sulfate or dicyclomine. And some doctors recommend very low doses of tricyclic antidepressants such as amitryptyline or fluoxetine, which can help calm the gastrointestinal tract in some people who have severe IBS.

Statistics show that nearly 20% of the adult population in the United States are affected with IBS, the majority of whom are women. It appears that IBS is effected by hormones as most women's symptoms worsen in the run up to and during their period.

With mild IBS, most people can prevent their symptoms if they watch what they eat and make a few lifestyle changes. Stress can be the biggest trigger for a lot of people.

Endometriosis can be a little trickier to deal with. The pain women suffering from endometriosis experience is caused by the development of tissue that is normally located in the uterus growing outside the uterus. Endometrium, the thin lining normally found in the uterus, grows aberrantly outside the uterus. Occassionally moving into the intestines. Each month as the endometrium tissue is shed it causes bleeding and scaring to the sites where it has attached itself.

Occurences of intestinal endometriosis range from 5 - 10%. The main way to diagnose if IBS is caused by endometriosis is to monitor symptoms in line with the menstrual cycle. Symptoms can be limited to during the period only or they may generally present and worsen during menstruation.

Common symptoms include a loss of appetite, feeling sick, although vomiting is not usual, diarrhea, gas, bloating, abdominal pain characterized by cramps, pain during bowel movements, and sharp stabbing pain in the rectum. Varying constipation symptoms can also be a common symptom of intestinal endometriosis as well as blood coming from the rectum during menstruation as a result of misplaced endometrium tissue shedding.

What are the Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

Irritable bowel syndrome is caused by abnormal function (dysfunction) of the muscles and organs of the gastrointestinal tract or the nerves controlling these organs. The nervous control of the gastrointestinal tract, however, is complex. A system of nerves runs the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the **** in the muscular walls of the organs.

These nerves communicate with other nerves that travel to and from the spinal cord. Nerves within the spinal cord, in turn, travel to and from the brain. (The gastrointestinal tract is exceeded in the numbers of nerves it contains only by the spinal cord and brain.) Thus, the abnormal function of the nervous system in IBS may occur in a gastrointestinal muscular organ, the spinal cord, or the brain.

The nervous system that controls the gastrointestinal organs, as with most other organs, contains both sensory and motor nerves. The sensory nerves continuously sense what is happening within the organ and relay this information to nerves in the organ's wall.

From there, information can be relayed to the spinal cord and brain. The information is received and processed in the organ's wall, the spinal cord, or the brain. Then, based on this sensory input and the way the input is processed, commands (responses) are sent to the organ over the motor nerves.

Two of the most common motor responses in the intestine are contraction or relaxation of the muscle of the organ and secretion of fluid and/or mucus into the organ.

As already mentioned, abnormal function of the nerves of the gastrointestinal organs, at least theoretically, might occur in the organ, spinal cord, or brain. Moreover, the abnormalities might occur in the sensory nerves, the motor nerves, or at processing centers in the intestine, spinal cord, or brain.

Some researchers argue that the cause of functional diseases is abnormalities in the function of the sensory nerves. For example, normal activities, such as stretching of the small intestine by food, may give rise to abnormal sensory signals that are sent to the spinal cord and brain, where they are perceived as pain.

Other researchers argue that the cause of functional diseases is abnormalities in the function of the motor nerves. For example, abnormal commands through the motor nerves might produce a painful spasm (contraction) of the muscles. Still others argue that abnormally functioning processing centers are responsible for functional diseases because they misinterpret normal sensations or send abnormal commands to the organ. In fact, some functional diseases may be due to sensory dysfunction, motor dysfunction, or both sensory and motor dysfunction. Still others may be due to abnormalities within the processing centers.

One area that is receiving a great deal of scientific attention is the potential role of gas produced by intestinal bacteria in patients with IBS. Studies have demonstrated that patients with IBS produce larger amounts of gas than individuals without IBS, and the gas may be retained longer in the small intestine. Among patients with IBS, abdominal size increases over the day, reaching a maximum in the evening and returning to baseline by the following morning. In individuals without IBS, there is no increase in abdominal size during the day.

There has been a great deal of controversy over the role that poor digestion and/or absorption of dietary sugars may play in aggravating the symptoms of IBS. Poor digestion of lactose, the sugar in milk, is very common as is poor absorption of fructose, a sweetener found in many processed foods.

Poor digestion or absorption of these sugars could aggravate the symptoms of IBS since unabsorbed sugars often cause increased formation of gas.

Although these abnormalities in production and transport of gas could give rise to some of the symptoms of IBS, much more work will need to be done before the role of intestinal gas in IBS is clear.

Dietary fat in healthy individuals causes food as well as gas to move more slowly through the stomach and small intestine. Some patients with IBS may even respond to dietary fat in an exaggerated fashion with greater slowing. Thus, dietary fat could–and probably does–aggravate the symptoms of IBS.
